Years 1 and 2

Here at Great Bradfords Infant and Nursery School we provide a creative curriculum that is mapped to the Primary National Curriculum (2014). We ensure a comprehensive coverage of national expectations through a variety of rich, exciting and motivating topics.

We believe children learn better when they are encouraged to use their imagination and apply their learning to engaging contexts. Our topic based curriculum provides lots of learning challenges throughout the academic year that requires children to solve problems, apply themselves creatively and express their knowledge and understanding effectively across the curriculum.

Wherever possible, the objectives for each subject are taught within the class topic. Where these objectives do not fit seamlessly within the topic then they are taught discreetly in class. Phonics is taught daily following the Letters and Sounds Programme.

School Worship and Religious Education

The school follows the Essex Agreed syllabus for teaching RE, which includes Christianity among other faiths.

Our daily assemblies are broadly Christian but non-denominational and affirm our feelings of belonging and coming together. This includes a daily act of worship in line with legislation.

Parents have the right to withdraw their children from religious sessions and should discuss alternative arrangements with the Headteacher.

Relationships and Sex Education

Sex education is not taught specifically as a separate subject. Children’s questions are dealt with sensitively by the teacher and answered in a manner appropriate to the age and understanding of the child.

In science children learn that animals and humans reproduce and that their offspring grow into adults; and to be able to name basic body parts and recognise similarities and differences between themselves and others. Through Personal, Social and Health Education children are taught the basic rules of keeping themselves healthy, about developing relationships and caring for others, and about the process of growing from young to old.

Extra Curricular Activities and Clubs

There are a variety of clubs available throughout the year. Many are led by school staff although some are led by external providers. The choice of clubs may include but are not restricted to: recorders, outdoor games, archery, music, computer club, maths, drawing, construction, gymnastics, 3 tees cricket.

Pupil Voice

The school actively seeks children’s views in making decisions about the life of the school. This is done through class circle times when children have the opportunity to express their opinions and offer and advice and support to their peers.

We also have a school council with two children from each class voted by their classmates. They meet as a group, representing their class views, with the Headteacher or Deputy Headteacher to discuss a range of ideas. They make decisions regarding the topics taught in class, resources needed for the playground as well as fundraising ideas and charities to support.

Outings and Visits

Educational visits offer an invaluable opportunity to enrich children’s learning, raise their self-esteem, increase their motivation and appetite for learning and raise levels of achievement in many aspects of their life and education.  

Visits that are linked to class topics can deepen children’s understanding of what is being taught and provide the most enjoyable experiences and enduring memories from school days.

At Great Bradfords infant and Nursery School we endeavour to enhance the children’s learning through visits off site and through visitors to the school. Parents are asked to make a voluntary contribution towards the cost of these visits and visitors. Without full parental support these opportunities would not be able to take place.
