Physical Education

Subject Leader - Miss G Frisby

What do we want our pupils to learn?

We aim to give every child a confident and positive start to physical activity. We want our pupils to learn how to move with control, coordination, and increasing agility, developing the fundamental skills that form the building blocks for all future sport and physical activity. Through varied, enjoyable, and inclusive experiences, children learn to listen, follow instructions, work safely, and show resilience when faced with new challenges. We aim to nurture pupils who can collaborate with others, celebrate effort, and understand the importance of being active for their health and wellbeing. Above all, we want our children to develop a lifelong enjoyment of physical activity and to leave us feeling confident, capable, and motivated to keep moving and keep learning.

How we teach...

Children enjoy two PE sessions each week, with lessons being structured to build children’s fundamental movement skills through engaging, progressive activities. Lessons typically follow a consistent routine: a warm-up, skill-focused tasks taught through games or challenges, and a short cooldown or reflection. Activities are practical, inclusive, and designed to help pupils learn through exploration and repetition. A key feature of our teaching, is that skills are often taught through relatable, child-friendly themes—such as vehicles, minibeasts, animals, or journeys — which help children understand movement concepts and stay motivated. These imaginative themes make activities purposeful and enjoyable, enabling children to explore skills in a meaningful context.

What pupils will have learnt to do...

We provide a structured, engaging, and progressive approach to physical education that supports the whole child. Clear and structured skill progression and inclusive activities help children develop fundamental movement skills, improve strength and coordination, and feel confident in their physical abilities from an early age. A focus on teamwork, resilience, and personal challenge also nurtures children’s mental well-being, helping them manage emotions, build positive relationships, and experience success in a supportive environment. As a result, children develop healthy attitudes towards physical activity, increased self-esteem, and a strong foundation for lifelong well-being.
